Substance Use Disorders and Treatment 101-104

This four-day course provides an introduction to the field of addiction counseling, with an emphasis on treating the substance abusing and chemically dependent offender.  It will provide an overview of the most current knowledge on basics of substance abuse and dependence; pharmacology and neurobiology of drugs of abuse; common treatment models; theories of criminal behavior and ethics.

Therapeutic Community Immersion

This five-day clinical training provides participants with the overview of essential principles and practices of the Therapeutic Community (TC).  Participants work and learn together to create a “learning community” which includes many of the processes typical for the traditional TC.  The training emphasizes experiential learning within the context of a supportive community.  It includes the basics of social learning theory; the history of the TC model; the use of TC behavior shaping tools; and the concept of “community as method.”  Special attention is paid to the application of the generic TC model for criminal justice populations and custody settings.

Therapeutic Community and Cognitive Behavioral Group Counseling Skills

This three-day training focuses on fundamental clinical group work concepts and specific techniques.  Much of the training is experiential, allowing participants to first   learn and then practice new group skills.  The training emphasizes the roles of groups and the various types of group utilized in the Therapeutic Community.  These include interpersonal groups such as the basic encounter; the static group; commonality groups and forums; curriculum-driven groups such as anger management; and the role and structure of seminars and morning meetings.

Cognitive and Behavioral Learning Facilitation Skills

The final three-day course introduces participants to fundamentals of learning and is designed to give practical skills that can be applied in a variety of curriculum-driven and cognitive learning settings that are part of the treatment process.  Particular emphasis is given to understanding different learning styles, different teaching modalities, and the learning challenges faced by some students.  A primary objective of the training is to provide facilitators with clinical techniques to enliven their curriculum and involve clients in their own learning process.

Cognitive and Behavioral Learning Facilitation Skills

This five-day course has been added since October 2005 as the mandatory topics to meet certification requirements in California. The topics include: Case Management, Dual Diagnosis, Hepatitis C, HIV and AIDS, Culturally Responsive Treatment, Treatment for LGBT, Anger Management, and Sexual Harassment Prevention.
